Lioness Portrait

A lioness (Panthera leo) sits observing a distant hyena stiffing around in the distance, after picking up the scent of a kill, during the early morning while other members of the pride pick at the remains of a buffalo carcass close by. This image was taken in Mana Pools National Park. Some years back the photographer was told that the white edging beneath the eyes of this basically nocturnal hunter actually serves a purpose, reflecting limited light to the retina at night, apparently. This observation may make sense, but has never been confirmed in reference works to hand.
