Mother and Child

Mother elephant (Loxodonta Africana) makes an aggressive, standing tall, pose as her child scratches in the sandy loam in a typically riverine environment of Mana Pools National Park. The need for sodium in their diets prompts elephants to sometimes dig into the earth to supplement their needs. The young elephant here was probably doing just that, when disturbed.
